What is a "loppet"
It’s a fun, sociable cross country ski event for all ages and abilities. Think of it as a large organized ski tour that includes refreshments. Loppets are not formal races, although the events are often timed, and many skiers challenge themselves to ski as fast as possible in an atmosphere of friendly competition. Other skiers take a leisurely approach, enjoying the scenery and socializing en route. Loppets provide an opportunity to ski different groomed cross country ski trails and be-friend skiers from across the province. Bill Bishopp wrote a great introduction to loppets for Saskatoon skiers here (starting on p. 6).
Bus trip to 33rd Annual Saskatloppet in La Ronge
The La Ronge Ski Club will be hosting the 33rd Annual Don Allen Saskaloppet on Friday, March 4 & Saturday, March 5, 2016. The forest fires of 2015 damaged much of the Saskaloppet Trail. However, organizers hope to offer distance options similar to other years, i.e., 5 km, 8 km, 13
km, 20 km, 35 km, 55 km and 84 km. Park staff and ski club volunteers are putting in countless hours clearing the trails this winter so let’s show them our support! Loppet info will be posted at:
We are arranging bus transport to the loppet. Taking the bus will save you having to drive on winter roads on Saturday night after your long, exhausting ski and your large banquet meal. Additionally, this will be a great opportunity to meet fellow skiing enthusiasts, swap tips, and learn about the trails from our club’s seasoned veterans. The buses are fully-equipped with Wi-Fi, DVD TV, refreshments, and of course restrooms.
Child (under 18): $55
Please note that these prices do not include loppet registration or accommodation. All participants will have to arrange their own accommodations for the night of Friday, March 4th.
Depart: Friday, March 4 at 5:30 p.m. from the Lawson Heights Mall. Arrive La Ronge Hotel and Suites ~9:30 p.m.
Return: Saturday, March 5 and depart late on March 5th after everybody has eaten (leave early from the banquet) and arrive back at Lawson Heights Mall on Sunday night.
